Pay per click (ppc) advertising can be a powerful way to sell products and services on the internet. One of the key benefits to ppc advertising is that you only pay when your ads gets clicked which means that even if all you want to do is increase brand awareness then you have the opportunity to get a massive amount of impressions for potentially a very small cost.

A critical element of any pay per click campaign are the keywords you choose to bid on. You must ensure that these keywords are highly targeted and very relevant for the products and services you wish to sell. You are better off getting fewer clicks that actually convert into sales than getting tons of clicks that do not translate into profits. The Google adwords program is the largest pay per click advertising service on the internet and can be a great place to start simply due the massive reach of it.

Other pay per click sources can be Yahoo Search Marketing and MSN Adcenter as well as other smaller search engines like Ask.com and Goclick. Tracking is another key element to any successful ppc campaign. Most of the major advertising sources offer a way to track the conversion rates of the ads. All you need to do is insert some code into the thank you landing pages that a visitor sees after they purchase.

Tracking will allow you to see which ads convert and which keywords are profitable. This is important information and can make a drastic difference in the profitability of your ppc campaigns. If you find keywords that convert well then consider raising your bids in an effort to increase sales by getting more quality traffic. On the other hand you will find certain keywords do not convert well at all and in this scenario you would be better off either deleting these keywords or reducing bids to try to turn them into profitable terms.

The quality of your landing pages can also affect the success of your campaigns. The adwords program considers the landing page you use and determines whether or not it is relevant to the ads and keywords you chose. If the landing pages are deemed irrelevant then you could find your ads get disabled by having their minimum bid raised significantly which will force you to abandon those keywords. Add related keywords to your landing pages as naturally as you can and always make your landing pages accurately reflect the ad descriptions and keywords you select.
